Nagarkot is one of the best places near Kathmandu to witness a breathtaking sunrise. It lies around 32 km from Kathmandu and can be easily explored in a short time.

You can take a taxi or private car to reach Nagarkot, which takes around 1.5 hours. While returning, you can visit Sankhu, Bhaktapur, and other small villages along the way.

Going by taxi in the early morning and hiking while returning is the best option, as it avoids walking in the dark and allows you to explore villages and back trails.

Sundarijal to Chisapani

The Sundarijal to Chisapani hike is one of the best short forest hikes near Kathmandu. Along the way, you can see waterfalls, temples, and panoramic views of the valley.

It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach Sundarijal from Thamel by taxi. From Sundarijal, the hike to Mulkadka village takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. From Mulkadka, it takes almost 3 hours to reach Chisapani, where you can enjoy stunning views.

Taking a taxi from your hotel to Sundarijal and back saves time, as each ride takes about 45 minutes.

Kakani Viewpoint and Tarkeshwor Village

After reaching the Tarkeshwor area, you can take another taxi back to Kathmandu, which takes about 40–60 minutes.

Budhanilkantha to Nagi Monastery

This hike takes you to one of the best viewpoints overlooking Kathmandu city. The trail passes through Shivapuri National Park, where you may see birds and wildlife.

Take a taxi from Kathmandu to Budhanilkantha, the entrance gate of Shivapuri National Park, which takes about 1–1.5 hours. From the entrance, the hike starts through forest trails, reaching Nagi Monastery in 1.5–2.5 hours.

After spending some time at the monastery, return to Budhanilkantha in 1–1.5 hours and take a taxi back to your hotel.

Champadevi Hiking Trail

The Champadevi hiking trail lies in the southern part of Kathmandu Valley, bordering Makwanpur District. The hike starts from Pharping or Taudaha.

From the Champadevi summit, you can see Kathmandu Valley to the north and the green hills and valleys of Makwanpur to the south.

Take a taxi to Pharping village, which takes about 1–1.5 hours from central Kathmandu. From Pharping, the uphill hike of 4.5–5 km takes around 3–3.5 hours. Returning via the same route, the total hike covers around 10 km and can be completed within 7–10 hours.
